This simple banana shake is ready in only a few minutes, and only uses 3 ingredients!

This creamy banana milkshake recipe uses ice cream.

But, if you want to make this recipe without ice cream, we have included a section on how to do this.

  • Banana: Use fresh or frozen. If you use frozen you may find that your banana milkshake may be thicker and creamier as opposed to using fresh banana.
  • Vanilla ice cream: Or you could try using a different ice cream, like chocolate ice cream for a different flavor.
  • Milk

Instructions

This recipe for banana shake serves 1 (makes about 310 ml/grams, 10.94 ounces). The ingredients can easily be adjusted to suit how many you need to make.

Step One: Peel and cut your banana into small pieces.

Step Two: Place cut banana, vanilla ice cream, and milk into a blender. Blend until smooth. If you want your milkshake to be thicker you could add more banana or ice cream.

Or if you want your milkshake to be thinner in consistency, add some more milk.

Step Three: Pour into glass(es) and serve.

How to make this banana shake recipe without ice cream

For a healthier alternative, you could make this banana shake without ice cream.

If you want to make this without ice cream: Add a dash of vanilla essence and sweetened of choice (such as maple syrup) to taste.

If possible, use frozen banana slices to thicken your shake. You may need to adjust the quantity of milk you use if you are making this shake without ice cream.

Tips for Success

  • If you add ice, you may find that your banana shake tastes watered down. If this is the case, you may need to add a bit more banana or ice cream and blend again.

Substitutions / Variations

Why not try adding other fruits like strawberries to make a strawberry banana milkshake, or add a dash of vanilla essence for a vanilla banana shake. Or what about a pinch of ground cinnamon for a cinnamon banana milkshake?

Maybe you are a peanut butter lover? Make a peanut butter banana milkshake: You could add 1 – 2 teaspoons of peanut butter (or to taste) before blending your milkshake.

Storage

This banana shake is best consumed on the day it is made. Any leftover shake can be stored in the fridge in a sealed bottle or jug for 1 day. You may find that the shake changes color the longer you leave it.

You could turn this banana shake into popsicles (icy poles). Place any leftover shake into popsicle moulds and freeze. Enjoy banana popsicles another day.

Can I use frozen bananas for this banana shake recipe?

Yes, you can use frozen bananas for this shake. If you use frozen banana, your banana milkshake may become creamier and thicker. But bear in mind that by using frozen fruit, it can be harder to blend your shake.

How can I make this milkshake without a blender?

If you don’t have a blender, you could use a food processor or hand mixer to make this milkshake.

It you don’t have either of those, you could first mash the banana in a small bowl. Then, allow the ice cream to soften. Place all ingredients in a jug and mix, or a drink tumbler with a lid. Then mix until combined.

How thick is this milkshake?

This milkshake can be made as thick or as thin as you would like. It depends on how much milk you choose to add to your drink.

If you want a thicker shake, use less milk. If it’s still not thick enough, you could try adding another banana or use frozen banana.

If you make your shake thick enough to eat with a spoon, you could eat it as a banana smoothie bowl.

Can I make this ahead of time?

It is best to drink this on the day it is made.
